Morning Situation Report

Daily Briefing

Two hurricanes and a coastal storm line define the shift — Nolo on Hawaii, Polo off California, Storm Warnings on the Atlantic

Good morning. The lead for anyone working a coastal or island district is water. NBC News reports Hurricane Nolo taking aim at Hawaii, and CBS News and NPR report it bearing on the Big Island, with CBS News reporting that authorities are warning residents to find a safe place to shelter and that life-threatening flooding is possible in some areas. NPR reports Nolo is expected to slow as it nears the Big Island and to become a major hurricane this weekend, dropping torrential rain on ground already flooded by big storms this summer. Plan for prolonged, repeat flooding demand rather than a single peak.

On the mainland Pacific side, the Los Angeles Times reports the Long Beach peninsula — already damaged by waves from Hurricane Marie earlier in September — now faces a threat from Hurricane Polo. The Washington Post reports Polo is the 18th named storm of the season. Crews in that area should expect to work an already-weakened shoreline.

On the Atlantic, treat these marine warnings as the confirmed status you can act on. NWS Mount Holly NJ has issued Storm Warnings for the coastal and offshore waters from Sandy Hook NJ down to Fenwick Island DE, out to 60 NM in places. NWS Boston/Norton MA has issued Storm Warnings for Cape Cod Bay, Nantucket Sound, Vineyard Sound and Buzzards Bay. Expect marine and small-craft calls and stage water-rescue capability accordingly.

Zoom out: As reported, the day's water risk runs on three coasts at once — Hawaii, Southern California, and the mid-Atlantic and New England shores — rather than turning on any single incident.
