Gulf depression tracks toward a weekend landfall as Alaska waters sit under hurricane-force wind warnings

The day's weather set the planning problem — a late-forming Atlantic system aimed at the US coast and extreme-category marine warnings in the Bering Sea — while crash, fire and law-enforcement calls filled the shift.

The lead for the week is a forecast, not a done call. The Guardian reports that Tropical Depression Nine, located in the Gulf on Tuesday, is predicted to become the Atlantic season's first hurricane, with a possible US landfall Saturday. If you work a coastal or inland-flood jurisdiction, treat the next few days as lead time: that is the window to confirm staffing, swift-water and high-water assets, and shelter arrangements before the track firms up.

Offshore, the warnings are already live. NWS Anchorage has issued Hurricane Force Wind Warnings (Warning Extreme) for the Bering Sea offshore from 171W to 180 and south of 56N, for Adak to Kiska on both the Bering and Pacific sides, and for Seguam to Adak on the Bering side from 15 to 85 nautical miles. The same office has Storm Warnings (Warning Severe) up for the Bering Sea offshore west of 180 and east of the International Date Line, and east of 171W. That is a marine and emergency-management problem for the Aleutians now.

Fire. Satellite sensors reported — but no agency has confirmed — fire detections across eight states on Tuesday: 116 over Idaho, 58 over California, 49 over New Mexico, 46 over Ohio, 43 over Washington, 41 over Nevada, 36 over Oregon and 31 over Illinois, none of them confirmed by any agency. Treat those as a pointer to go look, not as incidents. In a confirmed close call, Firefighter Close Calls reports two firefighters in Albuquerque fell about eight feet through a floor into a basement fire and escaped without injury — a reminder to sound floors over a working basement. SFGATE reports a woman was found dead and burned within the footprint of a Northern California wildfire in El Dorado County; a sheriff's sergeant told the outlet, "We don't have a lot to go off of." On the workforce side, Cleveland.com reports North Royalton's Issue 57 would add three firefighter-paramedics to the department's current 36.

EMS and rescue. CBS News reports two people were killed in a Florida school bus crash on Monday, and has released the 911 calls. The Los Angeles Times reports three people, including UCLA and UC Santa Cruz students, were killed in a Monterey County crash on Sunday evening.

Law enforcement. The New York Post reports a bomb threat prompted a police response and evacuation at a Montessori school in Carmichael, California, with all students accounted for according to authorities. The Tampa Bay Times reports questions are rising after a Pasco County deputy shot a man. ABC News reports a California couple was arrested on child-abuse charges tied to a surrogacy investigation involving at least 21 children.

What to watch: the Gulf system's track and any landfall decision by Saturday.
