Hurricane Isaias closes on the Gulf Coast as NWS Mobile posts extreme hurricane and storm surge warnings across six warnings

Good morning. Lead with the water. NWS Mobile AL has issued Hurricane Warnings (Warning Extreme) for Mobile Central, Okaloosa Inland and Baldwin Central, and Storm Surge Warnings (Warning Extreme) for Mobile Central, Escambia Coastal and Mobile Coastal. Those are the only weather statuses in this brief carrying an agency behind them, and they are the ones to plan around. NBC News reports heavy rain and strong winds already battering parts of Florida as the storm, which NBC describes as Category 3, approaches landfall; its WJHG reporter filed from Walton County. The Tampa Bay Times reports surfers riding waves stirred up by Isaias at Sunset Beach despite warnings — expect water-rescue demand ahead of, not after, the worst of it.

The weather is not finished once the center passes. NJ.com, citing the National Weather Service, reports Isaias remnants bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms and a tornado threat to New Jersey on Sunday. On the other coast, the Los Angeles Times reports Newport Beach and other spots flooded Friday as communities braced for Tropical Storm Rachel, which it says is expected to cause more damage over the weekend. Two coasts, two systems, overlapping into the weekend.

EMS and traffic. The Guardian reports a chain-reaction crash in the eastern Bronx after a motorist barreled through a busy intersection. We are not naming anyone involved.

Rescue. The Oregonian reports Lincoln County, Oregon, sheriff's deputies pulled an elderly man from a half-submerged car that had crashed into a bay. CBS News reports bodycam footage of Culpeper, Virginia, police reaching a man trapped in a bedroom during a house fire.

Law enforcement. NPR and the New York Post report an ICE shooting of a man in New York City that has sharpened tension between state officials and the Trump administration over sanctuary policy. Fox News reports US Marshals arrested a San Diego chef identified as a fugitive wanted in an Iowa kidnapping and shooting. SFGATE reports a Santa Rosa car-theft arrest. The Houston Chronicle reports Conroe police defending Flock cameras after the city logged more than 14.6 million vehicle reads in 30 days.

Fire — watch, do not act. Satellite fire detections were reported but not confirmed by any agency over Texas (161), Mississippi (106), Louisiana (74), Ohio (59), Tennessee (45), Illinois (32), Indiana (31) and New Mexico (25). None of these is an agency-confirmed incident; read them as a heat-signature screen, not a dispatch.

Zoom out: The day was driven by tropical weather on two coasts at once — Hurricane Isaias on the Gulf and Southeast, Tropical Storm Rachel on the California coast.
