Two flight crew killed over the Dome Fire; a California arson-linked manhunt ends in a shootout

Good morning. Two flight crew members were killed Sunday afternoon when a firefighting helicopter crashed while working the Dome Fire in Yosemite National Park. The Guardian reported the aircraft was conducting water drops over the fire, which it said had burned more than 3,000 acres. Wildfire Today reported that the aerospace company that owned the helicopter, Precision, confirmed the two deaths. We are not naming the crew; next-of-kin notification has not been confirmed by any agency. For crews still assigned to that fire, treat aviation ops as changed until your own IC says otherwise.

Fire and law enforcement overlapped in Placer County. The Los Angeles Times reported that a murder suspect led police on a manhunt, rammed a patrol car, and set forest fires as officers closed in, and was killed in a shootout Monday morning. SFGATE reported the same suspect had broken into a home and killed a woman, and that authorities said the suspect had been arrested three times this month. No one is named here.

EMS and LE: the New York Post reported that a 14-year-old boy was shot in the back and killed in a possible scooter robbery in Queens on Monday afternoon; the NYPD said the shooting happened in Edgemere around 3:40 p.m., and the Post reported EMS took him to a hospital. Separately, The Oregonian reported that human remains were found in Warm Springs and that the FBI and police are investigating, with no details released. Cleveland.com reported police arrested three boys and one man over a Sept. 7 armed robbery at the Drake apartments.

Rescue: NJ.com reported police in Manchester pulled a driver from a car that then fully submerged in a pond.

Emergency management and dispatch: the National Weather Service has Flood Warnings out. NWS Milwaukee/Sullivan covers Lake, IL and Kenosha, WI, and Racine, WI; NWS Chicago covers La Salle, IL; NWS Wilmington covers Hocking, Greene and Warren, OH; NWS Charleston, WV covers Athens, OH. In the tropics, ABC News reported Polo strengthened to a hurricane off western Mexico, and The Washington Post reported Tropical Storm Fay is the season's sixth named storm.

One caution for fire and EM desks: satellite fire detections were reported Monday but not confirmed by any agency — 159 over Washington, 82 over Nevada, 62 over Texas, 61 over Alabama, 44 over Louisiana, 40 over Mississippi, 28 over South Carolina and 25 over Georgia. Treat these as heat signatures to check, not as confirmed fires, until a local agency says so.

Zoom out: Fire ran through the day from more than one direction — an aircraft down over the Dome Fire, forest fires set during a manhunt, and unconfirmed satellite heat detections across eight states.
