NWS storm warnings ring the Northeast coast as Hurricane Nolo — still unconfirmed by any agency — closes on Hawaii
Good morning. Start with what is agency-confirmed. The National Weather Service has Storm Warnings (Warning Severe) in force across the coastal and offshore waters from Sandy Hook, NJ south to Cape May and on to Fenwick Island, DE, issued by NWS Mount Holly, NJ. NWS Upton, NY carries matching Storm Warnings from Sandy Hook to Fire Island Inlet, from Fire Island Inlet to Moriches Inlet, and on Long Island Sound west of New Haven/Port Jefferson. If your district touches those waters, expect coastal and marine impacts through the period and treat small-craft and shoreline calls accordingly. CBS News reports a nor'easter is dumping rain along parts of the East Coast.
On the other coast, the threat is reported but not confirmed by any agency: The Guardian and CBS News report that Hurricane Nolo is bearing down on Hawaii with heavy rain, powerful winds, flash floods and extreme surf, and the New York Post reports it as a Category 2 with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph, sitting 145 miles south of South Point — none of it confirmed by an agency to us. Areas still recovering from earlier storms are cited as most exposed.
Also reported but unconfirmed by any agency: satellite fire detections over Ohio (51), Indiana (49), South Carolina (48), Tennessee (43), Arkansas (34) and Georgia (32), and the opening of Oregon's fall hunting season this weekend amid drought and wildfire conditions.
Fire. SFGATE reports that, according to police, a Vallejo police vehicle caught fire on Interstate 80 in Fairfield on Thursday. Firefighter Close Calls, citing WBNG, reports a Delaware County man was sentenced to six months in county jail over a July 2025 DWI crash that killed an East Branch firefighter; the fire chief called the outcome underwhelming, saying, "We were looking for closure on this."
Law enforcement. The Oregonian, Cleveland.com and NJ.com report four dead in a shooting at a Caribbean tourism location, according to police, with the shooter not yet identified. NBC News reports a neighbor charged with murder after a Georgia delivery driver's remains were found, police said Friday. The Los Angeles Times reports an arrest more than a year after a newborn was found alive by a dumpster in the rain. Fox News reports two men, 89 and 73, charged after an undercover Miami police drug operation. The Washington Post reports police searching a Philadelphia house for clues to missing women. ABC News reports Mississippi police believe a woman found hanging was dead before her body was placed there, in what they call a staged scene.
Dispatch and EM. Government Executive reports the shutdown mass-layoff policy has been rescinded as part of a union settlement, after reduction-in-force notices went to thousands during last fall's 43-day shutdown — relevant if your agency relies on affected federal staffing.
What to watch: the NWS warnings off the Northeast, the nor'easter's rainfall, and further agency confirmation on Nolo before acting on the storm's reported strength.
Zoom out: Two coasts are wet at once — a nor'easter and live NWS storm warnings on the Atlantic seaboard, with reports of a hurricane bearing on Hawaii.
