Nor'easter floods the Northeast; NWS flood warnings still up in Iowa, Massachusetts and Illinois

Good morning. The nor'easter is the day. CBS News reports the storm was winding down after hitting parts of the East Coast hard with heavy rain, flooding and destructive winds. The Guardian reports the storm caused power outages, flooding, high winds and hazardous ocean conditions, and that hundreds of thousands were left without electricity across the region. NPR reports Northeast coastal communities are assessing damage from the storm, which brought high winds and lashing rain coinciding with high tides from Virginia to southern Maine. For the shift, that means water rescue, downed lines and coastal flooding as the priorities, with tide timing the variable to watch.

The warnings are still live. The National Weather Service has Flood Warnings up for Clinton and Scott counties, Iowa (NWS Quad Cities); Bristol and Plymouth counties, Massachusetts (NWS Boston/Norton); and Lake County, Illinois (NWS Chicago). These are agency-issued and current. Two flooded-street reports from the storm are worth a line for crews working water: NJ.com reports a shark was seen swimming through a flooded neighborhood in Surf City, and The Washington Post reports the storm uncovered a shipwreck remnant on Nantucket, a wooden piece believed to be from a schooner that wrecked in 1884.

Off Puerto Rico, The Oregonian reports a boat capsized, with the search continuing into Monday night.

On the fire side, unconfirmed satellite fire detections were reported across the Southeast and are not confirmed by any agency: 178 over Mississippi, 177 over Arkansas, 115 over Alabama, 84 over Tennessee, 79 over Georgia, 63 over South Carolina and 53 over Florida. Satellite hits are not incidents until an agency confirms them. Firefighter Close Calls reports that, according to the Sykesville Fire Department, two firefighters were treated for minor burn injuries after a fire on East Main Street in Sykesville Borough, Jefferson County, early Sunday — note the outlet's headline says North Carolina while its report places the fire in Jefferson County, Pa. ABC News reports a new study found residents near the 2023 Maui wildfires show elevated metals linked to impacted lung health from smoke, ash and debris — a long-tail exposure point for anyone who worked those fires.

For law enforcement: a report that a police chief in Maryland was killed in a head-on collision with a delivery driver is not confirmed by any agency. The Tampa Bay Times reports the Pinellas County sheriff called a man's death after a struggle with St. Petersburg police an "excusable homicide." NBC News reports police in Dublin, California arrested the in-laws in the murder of a New York Times executive. The Los Angeles Times reports a former L.A. County sheriff's deputy was sentenced Monday to nearly two years in federal prison for civil rights violations including intimidation and illegal search warrants. The New York Post and Fox News report a former "American Idol" contestant's recorded police interview was played for jurors as testimony wound down in his wife's murder case. And CNN reports almost 200 animals were rescued from a puppy mill in Ocean County — an animal-control and mutual-aid draw if it lands in your area.

Zoom out: Monday split the day's work in two — a confirmed coastal storm in the Northeast and a run of unconfirmed inland fire detections across the Southeast — two regions reading very different maps.
